Twink, the Toy Piano Band! Twink, the Toy Piano Band!

Review of Supercute! from All Music Guide by Adam Greenberg

Pushing the envelope on trying new things, "Supercute!" is an exploration of dance music making use of a set of toy pianos as the featured instrument of choice. All works center around the clink of the mini pianos, with the addition of anything from a section of ska horns in "Dandelion Wine" to breakbeats and scratching on antique record players in "Light Through a Keyhole" to a cello in a somewhat dreadful cover of "Enter Sandman" à la Apocalyptica. Some of the pieces hit squarely, some miss the mark for sheer listening enjoyment. The pianos, when mixed properly, can lend themselves to a nice electronica sound with a trance bent. When tossed into some other situations, though, the clinking can become too repetitive and out of sync for its own good. Grating at times? Yes. Constantly intriguing though? Certainly. Worth a listen or two? For anyone with a touch of adventure, the answer will be yes.
